Notes : The present lot is a striking example of Ndlovu's documentation of black life, rendered with both humour and sincerity. The scene depicts an interaction involving three women: two black women braid the blonde hair of a white woman. Suspended within the illusion of a crate, the scene evokes the sense of a memory or familiar moment the artist recalls. The title suggests a casual remark the artist may have overheard between the stylists as they work, while the white woman sits hunched forward in discomfort as her hair is pulled into the style. The title offers insight into the conversational and tactile rhythms of the salon anchoring the painting in lived experience. While the work highlights a moment of everyday life, it also gestures towards the cultural and historical significance of black women's braiding traditions. These traditions have sparked global conversations about cultural appropriation " particularly the way a practice rooted in identity, history, and community can be recast as fashionable or trendy when adopted without awareness of its origins. The present lot might tap into these conversations.
