Notes : Maternity scenes are not unusual in Sekoto's oeuvre. This particular example gives provenance to the later mother and child scenes, such as those illustrated in Barbara Lindop, Gerard Sekoto (Randburg, 1988, pgs. 200-203). We know that Sekoto remembered such images and repeated them consistently; here is further proof of how he would go to his remembered store and pick out imagery for reconsideration.Babies and children definitely held an immediate appeal for Sekoto, which is evident given the tenderness of this scene. Babies are often seen on mothers' backs in his work, and there is the unforgettable image of the toddler in the Street Scene in the collection of the Pretoria Art Museum. The above belongs to the rare group of watercolours painted in poster paints on brown paper circa 1939. This example is the earliest dated watercolour from this period, and as such it gives impetus and energy to Sekoto's whole creative life's work.We are grateful to Barbara Lindop for her assistance in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
