Notes : ABOUT THE ARTIST Jan-Henri Booyens is primarily an abstract painter and is interested in the elements of change, often using audio software which he corrupts and then utilises as the basis of works. He sees the beauty in mistakes and little errors. Opening the viewer to their own interpretation. In a recent interview regarding his solo exhibition at Simchowitz Gallery in Los Angeles, America, he commented, “I am really interested in error, the beauty of the error, and the beauty of the mistake. Those are important to me”. This is evidently visible in the title of the work, ARCHITECTS OF DESASTER. Notably, Booyens was one-third of the infamous artist collective Avant Car Guard, together with Zander Blom and Michael MacGarry. The group took the second annual Johannesburg Art Fair in 2009 by storm, challenging South African Contemporary art, with their now infamous stint, Bury J.H.P ‘KENDELL’ Geers, Die Verlore Kind. Complete with a tombstone, this sculpture offered a satirical critique of South Africa’s art world. The artist has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, including People used to dream about the future at artSPACE in Berlin Germany in 2009 and Save it ‘till the Morning After, blank projects, Cape Town in 2013 as well as New Day Spring Group Exhibition, Graham Contemporary, Johannesburg in 2022. Most recently, from 25 May to 24 June 2023, he held his first solo exhibition in the United States, titled Deflector Ray at Simchowitz Gallery in Los Angeles, to much critical acclaim.
