Notes : Born in 1935, Durant Sihlali's work is well-known for his watercolour works.
The artist, paints like a photographer, capturing subjects with a sincere and sympathetic eye. His awareness of the everyday struggles faced by black people under Apartheid helps to create an archive that documents both the extraordinary and the mundane, crisis and the routine that comes before crisis. The end result is a body of work that pushes us to conceive a historical period in which massive political protests and violent acts are inextricably linked to how individuals go about their daily lives and household routines.[1]
