Walter Edward Westbrook, a South African artist born in 1921 and who passed away in 2015, is renowned for his evocative watercolour landscapes. His work reflects the arid beauty of the Northern Cape and Namibia, as well as the tranquil countryside of Kent and the English Channel. Westbrook began his artistic journey at a young age, studying under the notable artist Walter Battiss in Pretoria.
Throughout his career, Westbrook painted extensively, even during his military service in North Africa and Italy, although he was not officially recognized as a war artist. His wartime pieces can be found at the South African National Museum of Military History. After holding a successful solo exhibition in 1947, he fully committed to his art in 1970 and became a member of the 'Bloemfontein Group,' further exploring the landscapes of his native South Africa.
Westbrook's artistic contributions are showcased in major public collections, including the William Humphreys Art Gallery and the Iziko South African Museum. His works continue to resonate in the art market, reflecting his significance as a collector’s item, especially for those interested in South African landscape art.
