Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993)

Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993) is a renowned South African artist, celebrated as a pioneer of urban black art and social realism. Born in Botshabelo, near Middelburg in the Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga), Sekoto initially trained at the Diocesan Teachers Training College in Pietersburg. He moved to Johannesburg in 1938, where he held his first solo exhibition in 1939, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Throughout his artistic journey, Sekoto's work became increasingly political, particularly during the apartheid era in South Africa. His painting, which emphasizes social issues, gained recognition when the Johannesburg Art Gallery acquired one of his pieces in 1940, making it the first artwork by a black artist to enter a museum collection. In 1947, he left South Africa for Paris, where he lived until his passing in 1993. His impact was further acknowledged with a retrospective exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 1989 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Witwatersrand.

Sekoto's works are included in notable public collections such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Pretoria Art Gallery, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His significant contributions to the art world have established him as a key figure in the South African art market.
