David Nthubu Koloane is a prominent South African artist, born in 1938 in Alexandra, Johannesburg. As a painter, draughtsman, watercolourist, and printmaker, Koloane's work delves into themes of political injustice and human rights, reflecting his significant role during the apartheid era.
Throughout his career, Koloane has been an influential figure in the South African art scene. He co-founded the first black gallery in the country and established the Bag Factory artist residency in 1991, fostering a creative environment for emerging artists. He received a diploma in museology from the University of London in 1985 and was honored with a Prince Claus Award in 1998 for his contributions to the arts. In 2010, the David Koloane Award was instituted to celebrate his legacy and support artists who embody his passion.
