Description : -Yoruba Maternal Female Figure Sitting on Stool- -Benin / Nigeria- -Early to Mid 20th Century- This wonderful figure features a braided coiffure over a large head, supported by a cylindrical, neck. The sloped shoulders curve down to arms bent behind her to hold up the small child on her back. She wears a string of white beads around the waist, and carved decorative bands around her calves. The figure is supported by the four legs, of the stool as well as her large feet, which suggest that she was a powerful figure. She has beautifully elaborate raised scarification markings throughout her face, neck, and torso. Provenance:, These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been, identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum. A fantastic piece that's perfect for your collection!
