This is the rating and price for Unusual West African Shackles Bearing Carved Designs, 1996

Description : Slavery Wrought-iron West African ankle shackles, with a heavy locking device attached, lacking the key, 32.5” long, consisting of a two-piece cuff-like section at one end, and another cuff-like piece and locking device at the other. Both cuffs and the two polygonal shaped link connectors bear carved designs ostensibly by the shackled slave. All surfaces with smooth patina. West Africa, circa 18th to 19th century   These designs that are consistent with classic 18th/19th century West African graphic signs and symbols illustrated in Clementine M. Faik-Nzuji’s definitive book “Tracing Memory. A Glossary of Graphic Signs and Symbols in African Art and Culture.” (Hull, Quebec: Canadian Museum of Civilization, 1996). A repeated design, not unlike the symbol for “bond,” “imprisonment,” and “handcuffs” appears on this pair of shackles.   Very similar West African shackles with carvings sold at Swann Galleries Sale 2342, March 27, 2014, Printed & Manuscript African Americana, for $4,750.   Exhibition History: Wilton Historical Society, 2019.   This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.   WE PROVIDE IN-HOUSE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE!
