Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lega peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden maskettes, each depicting abstract anthropomorphic faces. The ovoid faces present with slit-form eyes, slender noses with prominent nasal ridges, and petite mouths, all surrounded by several peripheral perforations. The first mask bears heavy white pigment surrounded by the natural wood color, and the second mask exhibits a yellow-white face surrounded by dark brown pigment.
