Description : Carved wooden figural fetish statue from the Teke people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fetishes (from the Portuguese word feitio, meaning artificial, or false), ‘an inanimate object worshiped for its supposed magical powers or because it is considered to be inhabited by a spirit.‘ Figure has iron metal attachments as bells around chest and earrings. Brass metal nailheads in belly button, shoulders, and atop the hat, along with beaded metal nailhead details for eyes. Rope and raffia is tied around the waist and the neck. The statue measures approx 29.5 inches in height by 8 inches in width by 8 inches in depth. Statue has minor surface wear consistent with age.
