This is the rating and price for Songye Janus Figure In Clay Vessel Pot Congo Africa, Second half 20th cen

Description : Additional Information: This stunning Songye object consists of a janus carved  ,figures encrusted  ,in a  ,clay pot containing unkwon material  ,or substances. The figures are carved in classic Songye style with a band of magical substances wrapped below their arms and above the swollen abdomen indicating magical potency. The figures also shows a warm used patina.Figures such as this are known as ,nkishi (sing.) Mankishi (plur.) ,and the vessel would hold the material known as bishimba that would give it its magical powers. Many groups in the greater Congo area, and elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities of the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. Sculpture often serves to divine the future, control one’s destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye and others, sculpture such as this serves as the contact point between the spirits and the priest, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. This is an important piece of Songye art and will add a unique object to any serious collection.
