This is the rating and price for Senufo Firespitter Mask Kponyugo Lizard Cote D'Ivoire , twentieth century

Description : Additional Information: A superb helmet mask with powerful open jaws held open by wooden dowels.  ,The mask is topped with a  ,carved lizard figure with a scaly back. Encrustation and  ,inner patina suggest wear and long use. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask is wide open for the wearer to see out.  ,This mask  ,was used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. This imposing helmet mask known as ",Kopnyungo,", meaning literally &ldquo, funeral head mask&rdquo, is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The Senufo are a huge tribe numbering over 1,000,000 and they live primarily in Cote d'Ivoire. They are well-known for the high quality of their sculpture and this mask is an excellent example of their expertise. This mask, used in ",Korubla", society rituals to cast out malevolent spirits, has often been called ",firespitter", owing to an old tradition among the Senufo of placing glowing coals in the mouth of the mask. ,  ,
