Bindings sl. worn, 2 vols. top of spine chipped. = Europa und der Orient p.463: Claude Savarys Lettres sur l'Egypte (...) entwickelten sich schnell zu einem Bestseller und nährten die Ägyptensehnsucht vieler Europäer. Gay 1622, Blackmer 1492: Savary travelled in Egypt from 1776 to 1779, at a time when the country was in a state of chaos. Fortunately he spoke Arabic very well, and although the difficulties were severe, he was able to overcome them, thanks to his enthusiasm especially for Egypt. His description of Egypt, together w. Volney's account (...), became the manual for scholarly travellers to the country. Savary's work is particularly interesting because, as Carré says, he was the first Frenchman to cite Arab texts. The first two volumes are an account of his travels, the third volume, purely didactic, is on Egyptian mythology, religion, etc.
