Description : 1st-2nd century AD. A carved rock crystal miniature amphora with strap handles and tubular neck, everted rim. 58 grams, 55mm (2 1/4). Property of a London gentleman, acquired by his father in the 1970s, thence by descent, supplied with geologic report No. TL004768, by geologic consultant Dr R. L. Bonewitz. An alabastron is a small type of pottery or glass vessel used in the ancient world for holding oil, especially perfume or massage oils. They originated in ancient Egypt as containers carved from alabaster – hence the name.
