Description : A BRONZE GILT-BRONZE AND ROUGE GRIOTTE MARBLE RETOUR D'EGYPTE MANTEL CLOCK, THE DIAL AND MOVEMENT SIGNED LEPINE PLACE DES VICTOIRES NO. 12 EMPIRE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY 53.5cm. high, 1ft. 9in. in the form of a standing Egyptian female figure standing in a niche, supporting a drum shaped case cast with drapery and a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, flanked by Egyptian symbols and hieroglyphs surmounted by urns, above a demi-lune base, on disc feet PROVENANCE Christie's Monaco, 21 June 1998, Lot 643 (sold for 176.826FF) Jean-Antoine Lepine, received Master in 1762. This clock is based upon a design by Thomas Hope in his publication Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, plate 13. After his travels throughout the Middle East, Thomas Hope (1769- 1831), returned to his residence on Duchess Street, in London in 1799 where his clock, probably manufactured in Paris, was amongst his collection of antiquities and antiques. A very similar model by Andre Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814) is illustrated by H. Ottomeyer/P. Pr”schel op. cit. p. 336 fig. 5.3.2.
