Description : PAIR AFRICAN BAMANA WOOD CHI-WARA. Mali. A male-female antelope pair of Chi-Wara headdresses carved in light wood with hammered metal strips, fiber and cowrie shells. The male antelope has small squared body on angular legs, short pointed tail, and supports a curved neck with openwork zigzag mane and tufts of hair on the perimeter. The female carving carries a young antelope on her back. These headdresses are worn and danced to celebrate farming and the mythical hero of Chi wara. Medium brown dull patina with deposits on body, surface weathered. Custom bases. - 26 1/2 in. high.
