This is the rating and price for Old Bamana Mother And Child Sculpture , Early to Mid 20th ce

Description : This is a very large old carved wood sculpture from the Bamana (Bambara) peoples of Mali, West Africa. MEASURES 45 1/2 inches tall. Such figures are displayed at the annual ceremonies of Jo, an association of initiated Bamana men and women, and at the rituals of Gwan, a related society whose purpose is to help women conceive and bear children. Jo and Gwan sculptures are larger than most Bamana figures, and their distinctive style consists of massive, rounded forms rather than the angular, cubistic ones more typical of Bamana art. Finely incised scarification marks cover their faces, necks, and torsos. For annual Jo and Gwan rituals, the sculptures are removed from their shrines, cleaned and oiled, decorated with cloth and beads, and set up in the village square in groups. The groupings always feature a mother and child, usually accompanied by a similarly attired male figure and several other male and female figures. The mother and child and her male counterpart are seated in positions of honor. An even more vital message conveyed by the sculpture is the importance of motherhood in maintaining social cohesion and continuity within Bamana society, and elders' roles in passing on their skills, powers, and values to future generations. This is the largest and oldest example we have offered in the last 22 years, an Excellent old example!
