This is the rating and price for Ngontang Mask W/ 4 Faces, Fang People, Gabon

Description : Fang People, Gabon: Ngontang mask featuring four abstracted faces. Early 20th century. Wood, carved in a hollowed, helmet-like form with four abstracted faces encircling the perimiter. Overall the form has a dark stain patina punctuated by llighter kaolin-covered facial planes. The eyes are glass, with underlying red pigment. The crests above each face are carved with a simple, identical coifures and adorned with a rough fiber rope which connects (or once connected) all four. The lower rim of the mask is incised with holes for costume attachments , and there are multiple viewing holes incised outside of the facial areas. The white faces on ngon-tang masks personify young women upon their return from the land of the dead beyond the sea. The Fang believe that white is the color of death and of ancestral spirits. Multiple-faced masks suggest the ability to see both the realms of the living and of the dead.
