Description : Southeast Africa, Tanzania, Zigua people (Wazigua), ca. third quarter of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figural head and torso of a stylized form with a tubular body bearing dozens of petite ritual scarification incisions along with a singular hole on the side leading to a hollowed-out cavity. The head bears gaunt eye sockets and flared nostrils, and the top is plugged with bunched rattan fibers. Figures like this example were used as fetishes to be wrapped with cloth after being filled with offerings. Size: 2.875 W x 7.3 H (7.3 cm x 18.5 cm), 8.5 H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.
