Description : [ Medals ] Royal Geographical Society East African Expedition 1878- 1880 bronze gilt medal 39mm inscription within an open wreath legend around reverse figure of Minerva standing left a globe at her side laurel wreath in her outstretched hand Very fine light marks suspension hole at top extremely rare and apparently unpublished (1) E200-300 In 1878 Alexander Keith Johnston 1844-79 was appointed leader of the Royal Geographical Society expedition to find the head of Lake Nyassa but he died the following year some 120 miles from DarEs Salaam. Joseph Thomson 1858 1904 appointed geologist and naturalist for the expedition took over as its leader Although not completing its original goal Thomson did reach Lake Tanganyika in November 1879 and was thus able to confirm Henry Stanley's theory as to the Lukuga outlet of the lake This medal recalls the period of great explorations with which the Royal Geographical Society was so closely involved from those in Africa in the 1870s and 1880s to thosegoing to the North and South Poles twenty years later Although this medal is not named its general appearance suggests that is was not only awarded but actually worn by is recipient one of the expedition members For his efforts as its leader Joseph Thomson also received the Royal Geographical Society gold Founders Medal in 1885
