This is the rating and price for Large Heavy Antique Figure
Description : A LARGE HEAVY ANTIQUE FIGURE, Motherhood, of wood with encrusted patina, Bambara, Mali/Gui. This large, very heavy and unquestionably antique Bambara sculpture is the virtual twin of a similar statue, almost certainly by the same sculptor, on display in the African Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York. (See illustration on page 170 of the excellent source book ''Black Africa'' Masks, Sculpture, Jewlery). Symbols of motherhood illustrated by dignified representations of pregnant or breast-feeding women are of considerable significance to the Bambara tribal group both as promoting fertility and serving as a link to the spirit world and the world of the ancestors. Because pregnant or breast-feeding woman do not menstruate they are seen as being closer to old age and death and therefore closer to, and more able to communicate with, the spirit world. Figures in this genre are not strictly representational but intended rather to radiate the calm dignity of motherhood generically and to celebrate the perpetuation of life PROVENANCE: This large and imposing figure was bought by the owner at a Fine Art Auction which included pieces from insolvent and deceased estates in South Africa in 1990. The original owner was not identified. 110 x 30 x 30cm
