Description : African art carved wood and textile wrapped Kwere fetish figure from Tanzania. Fetishes (from the Portuguese word feitio, meaning artificial, or false), ‘an inanimate object worshiped for its supposed magical powers or because it is considered to be inhabited by a spirit.‘ Figure has enlarged head and ears, has no arms or feet. Textile wrapping is possibly leather with red tone coating. Sculpture is mounted atop wood base. Measures approx 14.5 inches in height by 4 inches in width by 3.5 inches in width including base. There is minor surface wear consistent with age. Pierced hole in head.
