Description : African Kwele Tribe Wooden Heart mask from Gabon. Mask features black, red, and white tone painted wood with heart shape details along the top. Smiling face in mask has incised eyes and triangular nose. Measures approx 16 inches in length by 10 inches in width by 4.5 inches in depth. Mask has some surface wear consistent like scuffing, fading of paint. African Art, Tribal Art, African sculpture, ethnographic Art, African folk art, collectible African arts, African hand-carved mask, ceremonial mask, decorative mask. Property of a New York Private Collection. ‘Known as ‘ekuk’ or ‘things of the forest’ this genre of mask act as intermediaries between the forest and the village. Additionally, the gentle curving horns of the ‘bata’ mask are understood to be a metaphor for the cosmic unification of those two realms.
