The, made from a root leaf, zoomorphic masks board from the Bedu cult (Bedu = moon), danced in pairs at full moon, in order to avert imminent danger, to protect the village from sinister forces and to transmit fertilizing potency.
The monumental masks monitored simultaneously on cohesion within the community and mediated - during a special ceremony, which could take several days - reconciling disputes. Shapes and colors also include therefore all conceivable opposites such as male / female, up / down, light / dark, round / square, full / empty, water / land, sky / earth, etc., came consciously to fruition during the ceremonies. The mask presented only superficially a buffalo. Through initiation the members of the society learned to read the symbolism of the mask. The design of this female mask is certainly a classic example of the estimated in the African art abstraction and reduction to the essentials. It is not about to replicate the natural, but the invention of a new form and the expression of content. This type of mask is also found in neighboring clans, for example, Grusi u. Nafana.
