Description : Title: Travels in Egypt and Palestine Author: John Thomas Publisher: Lippincott, Grambo, and Co. City: Philadelphia Year: 1853 Printing Information: First Edition Binding Style: Hardcover Pagination: 173 pages plus 1 page note and 24 unnumbered pages of advertisements Width: 5.25 Height: 7.75 Book Details: It is, however, proper to state, that although the regions visited by him may have been already described by others, who have had more time and ampler opportunities for observation, it has, nevertheless, been his fortune to be among the first to witness some recent discoveries, as yet almost unknown in the United States, among which may be mentioned the singular ruins of Hadjar Khem, in Malta, and the vast subterranean halls near the site of ancient Memphis, in Egypt. He regards himself, moreover, as peculiarly fortunate in having enjoyed the privilege of visiting Palestine at that particular season of the year, when the beauties both of the country and of the climate, were probably exhibited to the greatest advantage. It is, perhaps, the more important to call attention to this circumstance, since it may serve to explain why his representations of the Holy Land, are more favorable than those drawn by the generality of travellers. (from author's preface) Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in blind-stamped black cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spine. Head of spine displays small loss of material. Book otherwise shows light shelfwear. Binding is firm. Front endpaper, preliminary pages and advertisements exhibit foxing. Pages are otherwise lightly foxed.
