The discovery of gold triggered an influx of foreign miners and the resulting friction declined into war. More than 365000 British and Commonwealth troops were deployed, but by the time sovereignty over the republics was gained in 1902, the allies had suffered 21000 casualties, many of whom died from disease. The British public read up-to-date accounts in newspapers and battlefield images brought the war to every home. To coincide with the appetite for war reporting, Royal Worcester issued in 1900 a series of six figures of soldiers in the uniforms of the principal regiments. The models are believed to be the work of George Evans. Although they were costly, the figures appealed to patriotism and were bought by affluent families whose sons had volunteered to fight for Queen and Country.
