Description : African Fang Tribe Wooden Ngil mask from Gabon, Central Africa. Mask features white tone caolin painted wood. Elongated face mask has incised eyes. Measures approx 28.5 inches in length by 10 inches in width by 5.5 inches in depth. Mask has some surface wear consistent like scuffing, fading of paint. African Art, Tribal Art, African sculpture, ethnographic Art, African folk art, collectible African arts, African hand-carved mask, ceremonial mask, decorative mask. Property of a New York Private Collection. ‘Ngil masks were worn by the Fang people in Gabon. It would have been worn by a member of the Ngil, a secret brotherhood responsible for policing and administering justice in Fang communities. The white colour is made from ground kaolin, a soft clay, and refers to the spirit world. The mask was meant to depict a terrifying entity, and it was used in ceremonies that involved spectacular dances. Ngil masks influenced the work of a number of artists of the French avant-garde, including Amadeo Modigliani.’ (Info from Christie’s Website). 7
