Description : Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A beautiful gessoed cartonnage broad collar of a semicircular form with a small neck groove and a singular tab along the upper rim. Nine concentric semicircles hang between the slender rectangular top panels, each with an alternating base color of cobalt-blue and crimson, save for the lowest rung which bears a pale turquoise hue. Repeating motifs of spherical, droplet, and lotus blossom forms accentuate the interior of each curved band in ruby, cream, sapphire-blue, and citrine hues. Size: 12 W x 7.5 H (30.5 cm x 19 cm). Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA, ex-Bonhams, London, Knightsbridge Antiquities Auction (May 8, 2013, part of lot 290), ex-private United Kingdom collection. Formed by Sgt. William Ellott (d. 1915) of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, and J.G. Judd, (b. 1923), collecting in the 1940s. Condition report : Repaired from multiple pieces as shown, with small losses and chips as well as light adhesive residue along some break lines. Left half cleaned of most earthen residue to reveal original colors beneath, right half is uncleaned. Fading to original pigmentation, with fraying to some areas of woven linen backing. Light earthen deposits throughout.
