Description : EGYPT. Roman-Coptic period, circa 300-600 CE. Child's textile tunic. This unusually complete garment measures 23.2 inches (59 cm) across the shoulders and 18.1 inches (46 cm) in length, of undyed linen-wool blend, stitched together from several large panels, with two applied decorative red stripes (clavi) running from shoulder to hem front and back, across the the top of each shoulder, and on two small front side panels. The V-shaped collar, sleeves and hem are carefully finished. Overall intact, with moderate loss to lower right hem area and minor tears. Cf. NY Metropolitan Museum of Art no. 33.10.39 (child's tunic from Kharga Oasis, Egypt, with similar simple vertical clavi). From The Living Torah Museum Collection, acquired from Sands of Time Ancient Art Inc, 2000, from a private Australian collection, originally acquired circa 1965. The tunic was a universal garment in the ancient world, with minor variations of form lasting from the early Bronze Age to medieval times. Egypt was a major textile manufacturing center in the early Christian (or Coptic) era and the arid climate ensured the survival of many fine garments. Coptic weavers commonly employed blends of linen and wool to achieve clothing that was colorful, durable and comfortable in the desert climate. This garment appears to be a simple short shift, but it is actually made up of several sections, each separately fitted and stitched together. The short sleeves and tasteful decoration indicate an origin in the 4th to 6th centuries of the Common Era.
