Description : Africa, Ivory Coast, Bete-Gere, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderful mask with exaggerated facial features including globular eyes, a pronounced nose, and full parted lips all beneath a high-domed forehead - further adorned by four protruding pointed ears and five curved, pointy horns. Attached to the crown of his head is a textile applique with a pair of cowrie shells, and a 'beard' of raffia decorates the jawline. Masks like this example were worn by dancers during funeral ceremonies and as a type of 'detective' mask, used to single out a guilty party.
