Description : Additional Information:  ,A Dogon mask well used with substantial age! ,But without any doubt this mask is well used and equally well preserved. The surface is very worn and the numerous chips and stains attest to long use with some remains of blue on the horns. The wear along the sides and inside the mask indicate substantial age. Masks among the Dogon were stored or left in rock shelters when it was thought that they had outlived their usefulness or simply were replaced by a new mask. ,It is not clear which character it represents. It could represent a rhinoceros Mask (Gomintogo). It could also be a ,rabbit known as dyommo. , ,All these masks , ,mask had participated in dama  ,masquerade or funeral rites.Living along the Bandiagara escarpment in Mali the Dogon are well known for their spectacular and dramatic funerary rituals and the various masks that appear during ceremonies. The funerary rituals known as Dama are presented by initiated males, members of the men s secret society known as Awa, who dance the masks that give life and form to Dogon myths. The dancing of the masks celebrate the life of the deceased while at the same time serves to equally guide the new ancestor out of the village so that the spirit of the deceased cannot harm the living. A number of masks appear each with a different sculptural form and identity reflecting Dogon mythology, cosmology to give sculptural shape to Dogon understanding of the world of the living. In the definitive book onfDogon art, Marcel Griule identifies a very close analog to this mask on page 419, one that he photographed in the 1930's in his book Masques Dogon, 1963, as the rhinoceros. Jean Laude in his book on African Art of the Dogon ill. no.101, it is also named Gomintogo. Looks close to the rabbit and I can imagine that in some instances it would be named the rabbit in some peoples view but close examination and understanding argue against this being the rabbit for the rabbits ears are smaller and rounded.
