Bill Bisset nearly scored for South Africa, but the English side counterattacked as William Bromet dribbled a lost ball downfield. Clauss put in a strong run before passing to forward T Whittaker who scored easily. Halfback Rotherham converted. 4-0 to the English. The South Africans attacked for most of the rest of the half. Chubb Vigne and Richards, who was criticised for kicking too much, were close, then came Oupa Versfeld, then Maclagan saved as Richards, Vigne and Harry Boyes attacked and only Surtees's intercept of Boyes's pass prevented a try. In the second half, several South African dribbling rushes nearly brought tries and Vigne was close with a drop goal. The outstanding visitor on defence was captain Maclagan. For all the South African attacking, the fit English side was equal to the occasion and there was no score in the second half. It was entirely a forward game, and played hard and fast by both sides. It was a game that was well worth seeing.
