This is the rating and price for Baule Carved Wood Standing Female African Figure
Description : This beautiful authentic figure was carved from wood in the early to mid 20th century by the Baule tribe in the Ivory Coast, Africa and holds a ceremonial pot to hold magical ingredients. Among the Baule peoples of Cote d'Ivoire, human experience evolves out of, and is inextricably linked to, the spirit world. This ''blolo'' or ''village of truth'' controls and determines the fate of the living. Divination figures such as this one served as links to the spirit world, and are critical to the professional practice of Baule diviners. The Baule are one of the largest ethnic groups in the Ivory Coast, and have played a central role in the history of the country throughout the twentieth century. This tribe waged the longest war of resistance against European colonialism fighting the French, and have thus been able to maintain their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups. According to legend, the eighteenth century Queen Abla Poku led her people west to the shores of Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river the Queen sacrificed her own son, giving the Baule their name which means ''the child has died.''The foundations of Baule social and political institutions are matrilineal, tracing lineage through the mother's side. Each lineage has ceremonial stools which embody ancestral spirits.Baule statues are usually standing on a base with their legs slightly bent and their hands resting on their abdomen in a gesture of peace.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s.
