Description : -Bambara (Bamana)- -Mali, Africa- -Early to Mid 20th Century- The Bambara people live in the region around Bamako, the capital of Mali, Africa. Their, traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. The society known as ntomo was initially for young boys before circumcision. During their time in ntomo, boys would learn to accept discipline, and did not yet have access to, the secret knowledge of the kore or other initiation societies. Today, however, the ntomo society more closely resembles various western associations in its bureaucratic structure, and its administrative and membership fees., There are two main style groups for ntomo masks. The first have a line of four to ten vertical projections in a row above the face, resembling a comb. These projections were often covered with cowries or dried red berries, and signified, beliefs related to human creations.
