This masks comes from the Bamana people and belongs to the category of Kono Society mask. This well-carved and classic Kono society mask is worn by adult Bamana males during the initiation of young men into adult status. Carved in secret by the by the blacksmith the mask was made from a single piece of wood. See close similar examples in BAMANA . The Art of existence in Mali , p.116-121
