Description : Hand-carved wood from one piece Mali, Africa, 1960-70s Bamana people Partly open work Peaceful expression Detailed, a beautiful figure Total height: 110 cm This hand-carved figure is made from a piece of wood and crafted from the Bamana people in Mali, Africa. Rendered is the mother sculpture Gwandusu with a child. She has in the traditional African society a high priority. The figure is seated on a stool, has a long torso and her arms are wrapped around a small child, who clings to her belly. Gwandusu’s face shows a peaceful expression and her head is covered with a dome-shaped hood. Two strands of the hair are reaching to the shoulders and end on the oval-shaped breasts of the mother figure. The decorative Gwandusu figure shows signs of age and wear. The wood is rubbed, some loss of material caused by termite infestations (inactive), signs of weathering and small drying cracks are visible. The total height measures 110 cm.
