This is the rating and price for An African Yoruba Opa Orisa Oko Iron Staff

Description : An African Yoruba Opa Orisa Oko Iron Staff, Nigeria, Early 20th Century, Hand forged steel with British West African coins, Venetian glass, jade beads, cowrie shells, brass bells and wood. H: 60 1/4 W: 3 in. Collection of Melvin J. Fox, The Ford Foundation 1951-1977. Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Melvin J. Fox traveled extensively throughout the region. The artifacts in his collection were gathered during his 26 years in West Africa. The orisha (deity) Oko, associated with farms and fertility, protects their devotees in childbirth, heals them with herbal medicines, and defends them from witchcraft. Staffs like this example function as Oko’s main symbols. They are forged by select blacksmiths, who melt down iron farming hoes donated by an individual wishing to found a shrine to Oko. The phallic form is intentional, it illustrates the verbal pun between the word for farm (oko) and the word for penis (okó).
