Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female Ibeji twin figure standing with broad feet and delineated legs atop an integral rectangular plinth. Lengthy arms flank the distended abdomen and pendulous breasts, with incised striations along her pubis and lower abdomen, and broad shoulders that taper toward a stocky neck. The slender head bears ovoid eyes within puffy brows, a smooth nose above a thin mouth, incised scarification marks on both cheeks, and cupped ears, all beneath a crested coiffure adorned with incised linear motifs and applied indigo pigment. The figure is further embellished with a strand of blue and orange trade beads.
