Description : West Africa, Mali, Bamana, ca. early 20th century CE. An abstract figure - possibly a shrine for the Tyiwara - carved from wood and covered with cloth fabric and a woven string net of cowry shells, standing upon cylindrical legs with a curved body, a projecting node perhaps to represent a visage, and a pointed finial with horse hair extensions along the back. Size: 14.625 H (37.1 cm) Exhibited and published in New Orleans Collects: A Selection of Works of Art, Owned by New Orleanians, 1971-2, New Orleans Museum of Art, no. 352. Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired over the last twenty years, ex Arte Primitivo, ex James B. Byrnes collection, Los Angeles, 1950s to 1970s.
