Description : Two Songye / Hembe ZaireÊshields, Second half 20th. C.,Êare created from a single piece of wood, One carved with decorative striations, horizontal ridges with masked face. Other with decorative design with face mask in center. These represent strength and were also designed to call upon spirits / ancestors, to protect. These stripes are coated with pigment. The symbolism of the face represents power and hallucinatory strength, while the stripes call upon spirits / ancestors. At the back of the masks, a handle has been carved into the shields. In traditional Africa, shields were used not only as defensive weapons, but also as decorative or ritual objects filled with symbolic meaning. Songye shields are all carved from single pieces of wood. The heads on the shields relate to the masks of this once warlike people from the Dem.
