Description : AFRICAN TRIBAL ART: NIKONDI FETISH/POWER FIGURES - Kongo peoples, DR Congo. Back to back carved wood Nicondi figures seated on a zoomorphic animal with similar orientation. Having multiple inserted nails, spongy bark covering, isinglass eye inserts. A Nicondi is the most powerful of the Nkisi. They are seen as a vessel for harboring a spirit from the dead, with power to hunt down and punish wrongdoers. They are inspired to action with invoked and provoked invocations. Condition good, commensurate with age. Late 19th/Early 20th century. 8H
