Description : AFRICAN TRIBAL ART: KWELE MASK - (Gabon, Cameroon, Republic of Congo) Carved wood mask of type known as ekuk or protective forest spirit, worn in beete ceremonies as witchcraft antidote. Two large horns represent the antelope (whose meat was eaten to protect against evil), heart shaped whitened faces with triangular nose, no mouth. Residual red polychrome outlines exterior of horns. Unsigned. Condition good, some surface wear. Attributed to late 19th/early 20th century. 18H x 13.5W
