Description : DESCRIPTION: Two African Kuba bwoom itok helmet masks. Kuba people, Democratic Republic of Congo, 20th century. Worn by dancers at funerals of dignitaries and in puberty rites (Maesen 1967: 36). Features hand carved wood face mask with polychrome painted geometric designs to face with conical protruding eyes, enclosed by drilled holes representing the all seeing eyes of the chameleon. One with woven raffia top decorated with cowrie shells and cloth curtain. One with woven raffia top decorated with cowrie shells, feathers and woven raffia curtain. MEASUREMENTS: 15 x 11 x 11 and 7 x 10 x 18. CONDITION: Wear and losses to polychrome paint.
