Description : A GROUP OF ANCIENT TERRACOTTA VESSEL FRAGMENTS Chalcolithic Period to Roman Period, circa 6th Millennium B.C. - 2nd Century A.D. Including Attic black figure fragments showing horses, athletes and palmettes, a red figure fragment with gilded decoration, two Villanovan impasto fragments, a Roman miniature throne and three other vessels, and a number of Early Chalcolithic Anatolian fragments decorated with geometric patterns in red paint, approx 1.5cm-12.5cm long (59) Provenance: Horatio and Patsy Melas Collection, Alexandria, Egypt, acquired before 1967. Thence by descent, moved to Switzerland and London. Literature: for a similar example of Roman terracotta throne, possibly a votive offer linked to the cult of the Empty Throne, cf. Charles Ede Ltd, Ancient Terracotta Sculpture XVI, March 2000, no.50.
