Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden male ibeji twin figure standing with broad feet atop an integral discoid plinth. The nude man holds both arms to his sides, has delineated genitalia beneath a petite navel, and has broad shoulders that taper to form the stocky neck. The stylized countenance exhibits bulging almond-shaped eyes, cupped ears, flared nostrils, and facial scarification marks flanking full lips, all beneath a conical coiffure with incised motifs and traces of original indigo pigment. Fine patina envelops the entire figure and makes for a lovely presentation.
