Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A heavy hardwood human female figure with an elongated head and long torso. She is carved nude aside from a thin necklace, her face has deepset eyes and a large mouth, the nose has been worn smooth from touch. Her left arm seems once to have crossed the chest. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4.3 L x 5.6 W x 11.95 H (10.9 cm x 14.2 cm x 30.4 cm), height on stand: 13.7 (22 cm). The Kuba created many sculpted images of females, both as standing statues and as figural cups for drinking palm wine. The Kuba kingdom was founded at the beginning of the 17th century CE and reached its height in the mid-19th century before contact with Europeans in the late 19th century. Sculptors had a privileged position in the society and used their art to increase the prestige of the wealthy and powerful by carving statues like this one. Provenance: Ex-Alan Davis collection, Santa Fe, NM, deaccessioned from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1983 and purchased by Taylor Dale from an estate.
