Description : West Africa, Mali, Bamana peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A fine, hand-carved wooden figure used in proceedings of the Djo Society known as a djon yeni (sometimes jonyele) shown standing atop straight legs. Boasting a lustrous surface, the female presents nude with broad hips, a slender abdomen, prominent conical breasts beneath square shoulders, a bulbous posterior, and short, wing-shaped arms. Her projecting visage displays minimalist features of a heavy brow and a pointed nose with an annular drill hole for suspending ornaments, all capped by a sizeable, flared headdress adorned by 5 perforations. Incised parallel striations embellish the neck, face, and periphery of the headdress, while rich, dark brown patina envelops the entire figure, imbuing it with a distinguished presentation.
