Description : -Yombe - Both Congo Republics & Angola- The Yombe female phemba statues are used in divination practices or associated with fertility rites. Phemba figures represent women in seated, cross-legged, or kneeling positions with pointed or rounded coiffures, necklaces of glass or coral beads, a cord around the breasts, jewelry, and filed teeth. Women are an important Yombe symbol since they are considered not only a nurturing force, but also seers and guardians of the spirit. The maternity figures are carved of wood in a realistic style, which is rare for African art. Mirror and nail fetishes have an aggressive expression characterized by an open mouth usually showing filed teeth. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.Add this incredible piece to your collection today!Piece has some minor cracking and denting, with a rich dark patina throughout.
