Description : Details: Vintage Antique MASK SONGYE KIFWEBE African 20th C Bantu Democratic Republic of Congo Lomami River This lot consists of a vintage or antique Songye Kifwebe Mask. Similar examples date to the late 19th and early 20th century. It measures 18 tall by 8 wide, is made of wood stained or pigmented dark brown. The Kifwebe masquerade is a genre shared by the Luba and Songye, indicative of the interaction that has occurred between the two societies. Kifwebe masks represent either male or female beings. Both mask types are characterized by angular and thrusting forms, and in both cases the entire face is covered in patterns of geometric grooves that are uniquely characteristic of these masks (Courtesy of the Brooklyn Museum). Condition / Notes: This lot shows well expexted signs of age and use. There is some abrasion to the pigmented surface, and visible holes for attachment.
